The grandparents of Alabama rapper HoneyKomb Brazy died last night after a house fire erupted around 6:30 p.m. on Dr. Thomas Avenue North in North Mobile. The deaths are reportedly being investigated as homicides.
In mourning Lelia and Tony Lewis's deaths on social media, Brazy, real name Nahshon Jones, posted that he begged them to move out of their home so they wouldn’t be “caught up in my s---.”
“I hate y’all got caught up In my s--- smh this s--- hurt main I beg y’all to let me move y’all every day, but y’all Taught me how to be stand up guy y’all always told me If it’s our time it’s our time god got us,” the rapper wrote. “Long live grandma n grandpa, y’all was my heart fr,” the rapper added. “God got us. That’s how it y’all in heaven.”
Family members of Jones’ grandparents, Lelia and Tony Lewis, told WKRG that they were shot and killed before the fire. The outlet, citing Mobile Public Safety Director James Barber, said the deaths were being investigated as homicides. AL.com couldn’t immediately reach a Mobile police spokesperson to confirm the report.
Mobile Police and Mobile-Fire Rescue are still investigating the incident and have not yet confirmed if the Lewis’ were shot before the fire started.
UPDATE 2/18/2021 (3:51 p.m.) — Public Safety Director James Barber confirms the deaths are being investigated homicides. Barber says the fire damage is slowing the search for the cause of death and other evidence. Family members told WKRG News 5 they were shot to death and the house set on fire. Barber says it’s too early in the investigation to confirm that.
“We don’t know how it happened, but we do know someone came and did this. We know it was gruesome like no one deserved to be taken from here like that. Not only our family, no human life. They had no regard for human life when they did what they did. This doesn’t make any sense. You have hurt so many lives, daughters, sons, grandkids, great-grandkids. You’re talking about a couple that had been together for over 50 years. Everybody knew them and loved them. To know them was to love them. They didn’t deserve this. Who does something like this? When do they stop? When is enough is enough? Y’all done took two innocent people here that lived their lives and to be this age and to leave here like that – that’s crazy,” said Letecha Lang, a family member.
HoneyKomb Brazy has made a few posts to his Instagram stories since the incident stating, “I’m ain’t even made it To the city yet n the feds calling me talking bout a shooting n this n dat I’m like damn my ppl the 1 dead this shit Brazy.” Also, the rapper's last post reveals that both of his grandparents had Covid-19. “Stop saying my granny n grandpa got set on fire they had COVID-19 both of them was on oxygen tanks they blew up when they was shooting in the house.”
Jones’s most recent musical project, “1067″, was released on Jan. 15.
